May 9: A Grande Day for Roosevelt Island
The Octagon, a new rental building, offers up a bazillion reasons why you should move to Roosevelt Island.Among them is the real reason: The imminent opening of the island's first and only Starbucks -- incontrovertible evidence that Roosevelt Island has arrived. Opening day is Tuesday, May 9, subject to change. They are sure to serve banana frappuccini.
There's a rumor that 125th Street will be getting a second Starbucks, this one farther East, near the Pathmark.

I scoped this building, and Roosevelt Island, out about 6 years ago. I was looking for a unique place to live when I was first moving to NYC. This building was gorgeous although it was very decrepit. The only creature living there was a cute, stray cat who I envied for having such a spectacular living space. This new rental building is NOT what I pictured in my head as to how this building should look if it was fixed up. They have taken away most of its beauty. Even the Octagon portion looks brand new. It is like when they take an old DaVinci painting and clean it up by removing dirt and then adding fresh paint to brighten it. Yuck! They obviously gutted this building and there is little left of the original except perhaps a shadow of the shape. I hate it. Then they attached it to these bland rectangles. This is why I rejected Roosevelt Island. Ther is nothing with any history on it except for the beautiful ruins on the other end and a colonial house -- both owned by New York City. I wonder what they will do with the ruins. They are so magnificent. When I was eyeing them many years ago, dreaming of living in such an amazing place, a police officer told me to "stay away, it's haunted." That only enticed me more.
HURRAY
WE DONT HAVE ANYTHING ON THE ISLAND NOW WE DO
